The Pasadena City College women’s swim team isn’t overwhelming opponents, but the Lancers are finding ways to win in close South Coast Conference meets this season. PCC edged host East Los Angeles, 132-118 and downed Cerritos, 128-112, to sweep a double dual meet Friday.
The Lancers are 5-1 in conference duals (5-2 overall). Four of their wins have been decided by 16 or fewer points, and the other victory was only a modest 32-point margin (over Rio Hondo on Mar. 17).
PCC’s heavy lifting for points were accounted for by winning 11 events. Leading the way was Melissa Cienega, who caputured first place in the 1,000 freestyle with the state’s third fastest time to date (11:34.84). She also swam to wins in the 200 freestyle (2:02.78) and 200 backstroke (2:23.55).
Cienega is all over the state top 10 in a variety of events. She is third in the 200 freestyle (1:57.76), fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:18.11), ninth in the 200 butterfly (2:20.73) and 10th in the 100 butterfly (1:02.49).
Jocelyn Jo also won three events, including sporting the state’s sixth fastest mark in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.68). She hit the wall first as well in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.71, slower than her state fifth-best mark of 1:10.77) and 200 individual medley (2:23.83).
Another triple winner was sophomore Anais Hacobian, who scored wins in the 100 backstroke (1:06.86), the 50 freestyle (26.65) and 100 butterfly (1:08.04). Event victories were also turned in by Lindsay Jensen in the 200 butterfly (2:58.27) and the team’s 200 medley relay by Hacobian, Jo, Cienega and Jensen in 2:03.62.
Directed by head coach Terry Stoddard, the Lancers close out the dual meet portion of their schedule on Friday, Mar. 31 when they travel to face host Chaffey College and El Camino in a double dual SCC meet.
