Lancers catcher Jeneve Medrano had 4 RBI in Thursday’s win over Chaffey.
The Pasadena City College softball team relied on the battery of pitcher Pica Madrid and catcher Jeneve Medrano as the Lancers improved to 6-1 in the South Coast Conference North Division with a 6-1 win over Chaffey at Robinson Park.
The Lancers (19-8-1 overall) received another stellar effort by the sophomore Madrid, who threw a complete-game, 5-hitter with no walks (three hit-by-pitches) and three strikeouts. Madrid almost came away with a shutout but a collision in the sixth inning between second baseman Alex Howard and rightfielder Alise Archuleta resulted in a routine fly ball falling for a RBI double. Both players were unhurt, only shaken up on the play. Madrid improved to 9-4 in the circle.
Madrid’s backstop mate Medrano, a freshman, batted 2-for-2 and knocked in four RBI to help carry the offense. The La Mirada High product lined a 2-run single with two outs in the second for a 2-0 Lancers lead. In the fourth, she lined a drive to right center and ended up with a little league home run as the Chaffey centerfielder fumbled the ball while sliding to cut it off. Medrano was credited with a RBI double as two runs scored on the play. In the fifth, Medrano lifted a sacrifice fly to left for the team’s final run.
On defense, Medrano picked off a runner at third base on a gun throw to end the first inning, and then turned a double play in the second inning on a popped up bunt, nailing out the lead runner at first.
Archuleta, a freshman from Burbank’s Burroughs High, is in the midst of a sizzling streak in which she has batted 12-for-her-last-21 (.571). The fleet-footed, lefty batter was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and stole two bases. Centerfielder Angel Urbina was 2-for-4 and both third baseman Brittany Ching and designated player Brittany Gonzales added doubles.
“We’ve been fortunate that different players have produced to pick up others who may have slipped a bit,” said PCC head coach Monica Tantlinger. “The whole roster has contributed, including our pinch hitters, pinch runners, and defensive replacements. Medrano has been a stabilizing force behind the plate for our pitching staff. Madrid and Angel Wintercorn have thrown some outstanding starts during conference play.”
PCC plays four games next week beginning on Monday, April 3 when the Lancers host Orange Coast College in a non-conference game at 2:30 p.m. As of press time, the Lancers were in second place in the SCC North behind first-place Mt. San Antonio (6-0 in division).
