The Pasadena City College women’s badminton team knows it’s a frontrunner in a quest for the program’s first state team championship. The Lancers reaffirmed their standing by defeating North region De Anza for the second time this season, 19-2, Monday at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

The Lancers lead the state in wins and remain perfect this season at 9-0. PCC head coach Jen Ho ran her record to 33-0 in all regular season matches from 2015 to the present (34-2 with postseason). PCC already clinched at least a tie for its third straight South Coast Conference title last week (7-0 in league).

Freshman Sarah Thaw teamed with sophomore Hong Yan Liu in No. 1 doubles to beat Tiffany Liao-YuYu Liu, 21-14, 21-13. The pair had a tougher time with the Dons No. 2 pair of Maoi Ng-Negar Hosseini, 21-14, 21-17. PCC’s No. 2 duo of Natalie Ong and Amy Huang downed Liao-Liu, 21-18, 21-17, and defeated Ng-Hosseini, 21-14, 21-8. Noemi Diaz and May Hy won in No. 3 doubles.

Thaw scored singles wins over De Anza’s No. 1 Hosseini, 21-10, 21-13, and over Liao, 21-7, 21-16. Ong, Huang, Chaw Thinzar Mon and Janin Herrera all recorded two singles wins. Huang (No. 4 player) rallied to beat YuYu Liu, 13-21, 21-13, 21-16 while Herrera (No. 6) went the distance to down Dons’ No. 5 Elizabeth Chang, 21-13, 18-21, 21-19.
