On Sunday, June 11th the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) of Los Angeles, the largest middle school sports organization in the country with 165 member schools, held their annual awards banquet at the Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles. Roughly 160 student athletes were recognized as being “All CYO” in their respective sport(s). These include: flag football, boys and girls volleyball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer and girls softball.

Several Pasadena area athletes were among those recieving recognition. From St Rita: Sarah Tupy (volleyball & basketball), Alex De La Mora (volleyball), Taliana Marganian (basketball), and Robby Nardoni (volleyball). From St Philip the Apostle: Heather Dopke (basketball), Gabriel Guerrero (flag football & basketball), Cameron Kuritani (flag football) and Marcus Powe (basketball). From St Felicitas & Perpetua: Albert Gamboa (soccer), Nicholas Lopez (soccer) and Julian Rivera (soccer). From Holy Angels: Monique Kirland (soccer), Mariana Trujillo (soccer), Sonja Smeritschnig (soccer), Kimberly Cabral (softball), Caitlin Murphy (softball), Nathan Quinones (soccer), Noah Perez (soccer), and Jacob Elenabout (soccer). From St Bede: Andrew Sacrsi (basketball), Connor Davitt (basketball), Matthew Buntich (basketball), Michael Lund (volleyball) and Sean Douglas (volleyball).

Of the nearly 15,000 student athletes who participate in CYO athletics in Los Angeles each school year, only (20) per sport are recognized as being “All CYO”.

Gabriel Guerrero of St Philip the Apostle was a finalist for the 2016-2017 Male Athlete of the Year Award; the award was presented to Danny Millea of American Martyrs (Manhattan Beach).

Finally, the “Randy Davies – Athletic Director of the Year” award, named after the long-time and retiring athletic director from St. Rita was also presented.
