Helped by a state championship in women’s badminton and high finishes in men’s soccer and men’s swimming, the 2016-17 Pasadena City College athletics programs achieved their highest finish ever in the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators Cup state supremacy standings in a tie for 22nd place.

The Lancers sports teams achieved their NATYCAA high with 71.5 points, the most in the 14-year history of the NATYCCA Cup (also known previously as the Pepsi Cup). PCC’s next highest finish was 2012-13 when its 57.5 points placed them 25th. Pasadena tied for 14th among SoCal regional colleges to also match its previous high of 14th in the region also in ’12-13. PCC was among 86 California Community Colleges that scored points as Mt. San Antonio won the ’16-17 state cup, its fifth straight title.

PCC’s top NATYCCA finish was a remarkable turnaround after the college followed its worst finish last season (2015-16 school year) in 50th place and 28th in the region.

PCC scored 20 points with its first-ever state title in women’s badminton, 14.5 as a state quarter-finalist in men’s soccer, and 12 for men’s swimming’s ninth place finish at the CCCAA State Championships meet. Additionally, PCC scored 8.5 points each for baseball’s Super Regional playoff advancement and women’s swimming’s 13th place finish. Women’s basketball added eight points for reaching a SoCal Bracket (third round) final.

PCC ACHIEVES FIRST UPPER FINISH IN
SOUTH COAST CONFERENCE SUPREMACY HISTORY

The 2016-17 sports season also was a strong one for PCC teams with the school’s best points finish in the college’s 31-year history as a member of the South Coast Conference. PCC placed fifth out of 12 teams with 111 points in the SCC Supremacy Standings for all sports (except football which is sponsored by the SCFA).

The SCC has changed dramatically over the years in the number of teams vying for the SCC Supremacy award. The SCC has had as few as five teams make up the conference, then eight, and with the addition of Rio Hondo and Chaffey Colleges this past season, the number has risen to 12. PCC’s fifth place matched its highest finish in any year (achieved many times) since 1987-88, its first in the South Coast. However, this is the first sports season that PCC was in the SCC upper half overall.

PCC scored SCC titles in baseball (first-ever) and women’s badminton (third straight) while taking second places in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, and softball.

Mt. SAC won the SCC Supremacy Award for an amazing eighth straight year.
