Caltech men’s track & field senior Alex Bourzutschky (Potomac, Md. / Montgomery Blair) has become the fourth Beaver in history to be named CoSIDA Academic All-America, earning Second Team recognition.

CoSIDA Release

As the only SCIAC honoree for cross country/track & field, Bourzutschky joins former cross country/track & field star Aditya Bhagavathi (BS ’16) as the only other Beaver to make his All-America debut on the Second Team. Multi-sport senior and water polo record-holder Chris Bradley (Half Moon Bay, Calif. / Junipero Serra) and former track & field standout Jeremy Leibs (BS ’06) complete the quartet of Academic All-America honorees in Caltech history.

A two-sport scholar-athlete also competing in swimming & diving over the past three years, Bourzutschky earned national attention this year with an appearance in the Jeopardy! College Championship. A physics option, he has compiled a 3.99 GPA and spent the summer of 2015 researching exoplanet magma ocean magnetic fields with Prof. David Stevenson.

CoSIDA recognizes student-athletes from each of the four NCAA divisions for their combined athletic and academic performance. The honor is one of the most prestigious in collegiate athletics. Nominees must have at least a 3.3 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, have reached sophomore status athletically and have been at the nominating institution at least one calendar year.

Caltech scholar-athletes have amassed six total All-America and eight All-District honors in the past three years alone after receiving just one All-America and eight All-District awards in every prior year combined.
