Pasadena Earns Playoff Bid Despite Week 10 Loss to Muir Saturday; Mustangs Finish 7-3 and Again, Left Out Of Postseason

By BRIAN REED-BAIOTTO, Sports Editor

If you didn’t have a dog in the fight, you could understand every bit of anger that the Muir football program is feeling.

The Mustangs hammer PHS, 33-14, Saturday morning at the Rose Bowl in the annual Turkey Tussle.

Muir finished 7-3 and PHS was 5-5, and yet, because of them being in different divisions, the Bulldogs earned a playoff spot, while the Mustangs did not.

Jahlique Stephens led a torrid Muir comeback with 214 yards of total offense and two TD’s.

PHS led 14-7 at one point and the Bulldogs took a 14-13 lead into the fourth and final quarter.

Malachi Langley and Mekhi Fox had long TD runs for Pasadena.

Amaris Harrison had a rushing TD at quarterback and Brian Love did enough at the same position to keep the bell where it’s been for almost two consecutive decades.

PHS won games in 1995 and 2005, but other than a tie, this is all Muir, all the time.

Pasadena will travel Friday to Santa Paula (9-1) in a first round game in the CIF-SS Division 11 bracket.

St. Francis (6-4 overall, 2-1 in league) got out early as expected to a huge lead Friday when they hosted the Angelus League’s last place team.

To their credit, however, Crespi made a charge after the second string got in for St. Francis.

SF coach Jim Bonds had to bring the starters back in and they immediately pulled away from the Celts.

The final score was 48-25 and the victory secured second place in the Angelus League.

Bryson Reeves keeps improving week to week and the sophomore had one receiving TD and another on a punt return.

Kevin Armstead one of his biggest statistical games of the season, including north of 200 yards rushing, and the star junior scored twice as well.

St. Francis will have to travel out to Calabasas (8-2) for their first round CIF-SS Division 2 contest with the Coyotes on Friday evening.

Maranatha (6-4 overall, 3-1 in league) was dominated in the Olympic League title game Friday night when they host Heritage Christian.

The Warriors earned the easy, 48-13 victory over the Minutemen Friday night, and finished the regular season 10-0.

Heritage Christian rushed for nearly 500 yards and they had five separate players scored a TD.

Isaac Fields had a nice game, as the Maranatha wide receiver had over 100 yards receiving, and an 86-yard catch-and-run TD in the third quarter to get the Minutemen to within 21-13.

Zack McClendon rushed for over 100 yards, and he had a 55-yard score, but the Minutemen couldn’t stop the Heritage Christian offense.

Poly (7-2 overall, 2-1 in league) picked a great day to play their best football.

Needing a win to secure a playoff berth, the Panthers had to beat their arch rivals and did so on the road.

Poly earned the comfortable 28-7 victory to earn a share of the Prep League crowd with Santa Clarita Christian and Rio Hondo Prep.

SCC defeated Poly a couple weeks back, but they got some help when Rio Hondo Prep defeated SCC last week.

Poly rushed for 172 yards, and as usual, Jackson Treister led the way with 111 yards on 23 carries.

Treister had one rushing TD, but the star junior hurt his knee and he left the game late in the fourth quarter.

Robbie Wilson completed 13 of 18 passes for 152 yards and a pair of TD’s.

Franco Alonso, who rushed for 42 yards, also caught five passes for 70 yards and picked off the RHP quarterback on defense.

Ryan Khazra and Connor Henderson had one TD catch apiece.

Thomas McConnell led the Poly defense with 13 tackles.

Sheldon Williams and Jackson Stimmler had 6 tackles each for the Panthers.

Poly will host Knight (8-2) in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 10 playoffs and with a time to be announced.

La Salle (0-10, 0-4) saw their brutally rough season come to an end.

The Lancers fell to Harvard-Westlake on Friday, 42-6, in their Del Rey League and 2018 season finale.

There is no sugar coating the obvious, but for those who don’t know the background of the 2018 La Salle program, they started the season just months after every single skilled position player transferred out of the school.

First-year coach Andrew Pankow hopes to be back in 2019 and as frustrated as he was about not winning a game, his players love him, because he’s been a positive voice all season.

Week 10 Scores:<br
