{"id":6775,"date":"2017-02-08T19:38:37","date_gmt":"2017-02-08T19:38:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pasadenasportsnow.com\/?p=6775"},"modified":"2017-02-08T19:40:44","modified_gmt":"2017-02-08T19:40:44","slug":"parents-report-how-to-raise-an-athlete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pasadenasportsnow.com\/?p=6775","title":{"rendered":"Parents Report:  How to Raise an Athlete"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By LINDA MOONEY<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to the National Alliance for Youth Sports, 20 million kids register each year for youth hockey, football, baseball, soccer and other competitive sports, but about 70% quit by age 13 and never play again.<\/p>\n<p>The number one reason: \u201cIt stopped being fun,\u201d according to Michael Pfahl, executive director of the National Youth Sports Coaches Association.<\/p>\n<p>So, how does one help his or her child retrain the joy of something known to be so good for not only the body but for developing leadership skills and self-confidence, reducing stress and improving sleep and concentration, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>Give them the tools and vocabulary to succeed, says Phil Dozois, founder and co-owner of Breakthru Fitness in Pasadena, which operates a youth sports training program called Parisi Speed School.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadenanow.com\/pasadenaschools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36743\" title=\"IMG_3017\" src=\"http:\/\/pasadenanow.com\/pasadenaschools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"828\" height=\"552\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Started in 1992, Parisi Speed School has branched into roughly 85 franchises across the country, including the one owned by Dozois and his wife Michele, and claims it is \u201cthe fastest way to become a better athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A self-described \u201cindustry leader in performance enhancement,\u201d Parisi Speed School promises to improve speed of movement and increase strength in character \u201cregardless of ability or economic status.\u201d They have more than 600,000 athletes and youth across the country enrolled in the program.<\/p>\n<p>The Dozoises sought out the system online, having had both of their children drop out of sports.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadenanow.com\/pasadenaschools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_2805-PNG.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36745\" title=\"IMG_2805\" src=\"http:\/\/pasadenanow.com\/pasadenaschools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_2805-PNG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"828\" height=\"552\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted a unique component for children,\u201d says Dozois, who brought the youth program into his already-existing health center, Breakthru Fitness, which opened in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>The Parisi system of training starts with a performance evaluation to assess and group young athletes into the appropriate training program, accounting for different ages and abilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get the kids that are struggling in sports but want to be faster and we get the kids who are doing really well and want to take it to the next level,\u201d says Dozois.<\/p>\n<p>So, what advice does he have for the struggling kids?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadenanow.com\/pasadenaschools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_2620.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36746\" title=\"IMG_2620\" src=\"http:\/\/pasadenanow.com\/pasadenaschools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_2620.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"828\" height=\"552\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore you let your children drop out of sports, make sure they know that there are a lot of things they can do to improve their game, things that don\u2019t directly involve the sport itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By \u201cthings\u201d he\u2019s referring to \u201cstrength, flexibility and speed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To succeed, kids \u201cneed both the skill of the sport and the knowledge of how to apply speed, strength and coordination to whatever sport they play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they don\u2019t know why they\u2019re good at sports, it\u2019s hard to continue when they have challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, a child may simply need a sports mentor who can point out problems with his or her overall movement, like running on the heels instead of the balls of the feet, or who will say things like, \u201cWatch that other guy pump his arms when he runs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadenanow.com\/pasadenaschools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3338.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36748\" title=\"IMG_3338\" src=\"http:\/\/pasadenanow.com\/pasadenaschools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3338.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"828\" height=\"552\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know that there\u2019s an awareness about it. Not everyone believes speed can be taught. But I\u2019ve seen it,\u201d says Dozois.<\/p>\n<p>He mentions how his son, who played soccer from ages 6 to 13, stopped playing when puberty hit and he \u201cturned slow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho wants to be bad at something when everyone is watching?\u201d Dozois empathizes. \u201cSome kids are so naturally good. It\u2019s hard to compete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a younger age, if kids have the long-term goal of being an athlete, they need to feel self-confident in their sport to stay with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey just need to learn this stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next season, his own son became one of the fastest players on the team, if not the most skilled.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadenanow.com\/pasadenaschools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Parisi-Seed-School.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36750\" title=\"Parisi Seed School\" src=\"http:\/\/pasadenanow.com\/pasadenaschools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Parisi-Seed-School.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"828\" height=\"551\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Parisi Speed School in Pasadena has about 100 students, ages seven through 18, and designs programs based on members\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s located inside Breakthru Fitness, a full health center with a performance room with turf, which operates from 5 a.m. till 9 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe adults love the turf,\u201d says Dozois. \u201cFormer athletes that like to train like athletes come here and use body weights, kettlebells, ropes and TRX Suspension Trainers. We appeal to people who don\u2019t just want to use machines like the bench press.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Breakthru Fitness offers more than 120 classes, from body sculpting to indoor cycling and adult turf training.
