Mayfield coach William Eklund asked his players before Tuesday’s CIF-SS Division 7 wild card playoff game how many of his players had experience in a CIF playoff game.<\/p>\n
Not a single hand went up.<\/p>\n
Anybody who’s ever played in a CIF baseball or softball playoff game can tell you how much pressure is lifted off one’s shoulders when your team scores first.<\/p>\n
Mayfield put an insurmountable amount of pressure on Serra when they pushed across eight first-inning runs, and the Cubs cruised past the Cavs, 19-4, on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Despite not having their ace, Jaylin Domingo, healthy to play, the Cubs rallied behind Giselle De Anda.<\/p>\n
De Anda went the distance and allowed just three earned runs on six hits.<\/p>\n
She walked one and struck out four to earn the victory in the circle.<\/p>\n
Monica De Zern and Julia Watson had huge games.<\/p>\n
De Zern went 3 for 5, scored a run, and drove in five runs.<\/p>\n
Watson was 5 for 5 with three doubles.<\/p>\n
She also had a single and a triple, leaving her just a home run from the cycle.<\/p>\n
And she actually hit one off the fence, so she came close.<\/p>\n
Six Cubs had at least two hits on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Jack Baggott went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and she drove in two more.<\/p>\n
Alyssa Romo had two hits, scored twice and had two RBIs.<\/p>\n
Madeline Biscaichipy went 2 for 4 with three RBI and a run scored.<\/p>\n
Malayna Domingo drove in a pair of runs and had one hit.<\/p>\n
Taylin Yankovich had one hit and scored twice.<\/p>\n
Lauren Carter drove in three of Serra’s four runs.<\/p>\n
Gail Usher and Rebecca Hall had two hits apiece for the Cavs.<\/p>\n
Mayfield will travel to Riverside on Thursday to take on Bethel Christian (11-6) at 3:15.<\/p>\n
