From STAFF REPORTS

It had all the makings for a good and meaningful football game.

It was 3-0 Campbell Hall averaging 43 points per game and allowing just 12 total points over their first three contests.

On the other side was 3-0 Maranatha, who average 37 points per game and the Minutemen have allowed an average of 11 points in each of their three victories to start the season.

It was also the homecoming game for Maranatha and they were looking to eclipse last season’s win total (3) in just their fourth game of the season.

Something had to give, right?

Well, yes, it did.

Maranatha held Campbell Hall to 40 points under their weekly average and the Vikings kept the Minutemen to some 30 points less than they were accustomed to scoring on Friday nights.

But the only real stat that matters is Maranatha grinded out a 7-3 win, and with thanks to their star quarterback making one more play than his counterpart.

Kwon Peterson, trailing 3-0 in the fourth quarter and on his home field, connected with Sumner Ortlund on a 60-yard score for what turned out to be the game winner.

The win does eclipse last season that saw the Minutemen got 3-6-1, and they’ve already scored 119 points in four weeks.

Last year, Maranatha scored just 155 points in 10 games.

Four-time CIF championship coach Steve Bogan said it reminded him of an “old-school defensive struggle,” and that his star all-purpose sophomore, Jacob Moreno, had a big fourth quarter to get the Minutemen going.

Campbell Hall recovered an on-sides kick to start the game and led to the Vikings only score of the game when they converted on a field goal.

But Bogan’s defense held the rest of the way, and Peterson did what he does best, and that’s making a play when the game is on the line.

Maranatha will travel to Brentwood next Saturday at 3.

Olympic League Standings:
