Sophomore Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) of the Caltech women’s tennis team earned SCIAC Athlete of the Week recognition for the first time of her career on Monday afternoon.
The second-year standout won all six of her matches this week against the likes of 15th-ranked University of Mary Washington, 19th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis and then-30th-ranked Christopher Newport University and led the Beavers to a 5-4 victory over the Captains at the start of the week. Over this stretch, Tifrea went to three sets just once when she beat the Eagles’ top singles player, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Additionally, Tifrea had a perfect week in doubles action alongside junior partner Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula). Tifrea and Liu ran their record to 4-1 on the young season thanks to victories against the top doubles teams on each of the Beavers’ three opponents. Arguably, the duo’s most significant victory of the week came against the Captains, as their tiebreaker victory proved vital for the Beavers to come away with their first team win of the 2020 regular season.
Tifrea and the Beavers faced off with Vassar College on Mar. 10.
