The Caltech women’s water polo team showed improvement from its first game of the season, scoring five goals at Occidental College on Wednesday evening.

Three of Caltech’s five goals came in the fourth quarter. Freshman Amanda Piyapanee (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) got Caltech going in the first quarter, scoring with 1:47 remaining in the period before senior Mackenzie Wooten (Las Vegas, Nev. / Northwest Career and Technical Academy) went on to score one of her team-best two goals. Sophomore Sophie Devoe (La Jolla, Calif. / Bishop’s) set up Wooten’s first goal with a nice pace, while Wooten’s last goal, the final goal scored by either team was unassisted. Meanwhile, sophomores Sarah Zou (Sugar Land, Texas / Texas Academy of Math and Science) and Yuyuing Lin (Scarborough, Ontario / Victoria Park C.I.) scored for the first time of the season with Wooten, along with sophomore Olivia Grobowsky (Houston, Texas / Westside) assisting on each goal. The Beavers also drew eight ejections, nearly double the amount from their first game together.

“All five of our goals were well earned,” Head Coach Jon Bonafede said. “Oxy brought some really good offensive pressure but our defense stepped up later in the game and we really came into our own in the second half.”

Bonafede and the Beavers will next travel to SCIAC juggernaut Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Friday, Mar. 6.
