Sophomore guard Samantha D’Costa (San Jose, Calif. / St. Francis) put together an outstanding all-around line that earned her another double-double against NAIA outfit The Master’s University on Saturday.

D’Costa scored 21 points and hustled to 13 rebounds, including 11 defensive boards while playing all 40 minutes without a breather. Most of her damage came at the free throw line, where she finished with an exceptional 13-of-14 rate and even made her first 13 free throws. Her exceptional shooting helped the Beavers to an 88.5 team free throw percentage. D’Costa was not the only Beaver to come away with 21 points, even in spite of her excellent day at the free throw line. Fellow sophomore guard Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) also tallied 21 points against a skilled Mustangs defense and knocked down three three-pointers.

Both players had key roles in the Beavers’ early success. The Mustangs executed throughout the game but the Beavers matched them in a highly competitive first quarter that ended with both teams knotted at 20. The hosts got to the free throw line with consistency in the opening frame and made the visitors pay by making all 11 of their team free throws. The Mustangs began to pull away in the second quarter and thereafter, but the Beavers stuck to the usual gameplan and kept the turnover battle close with the Mustangs, finishing just one turnover away from drawing even.

Head Coach Bridgette Reyes and the Beavers will aim for their first win of the season when the travel to the University of Saint Katherine on Wednesday, Dec. 13.
