Until someone knocks La Canada off their perch, the Spartans are ‘the man’ of the Rio Hondo League.

Don’t let their record fool you, they and Blair have both played incredibly tough preseason tournaments.

It seemed to many, though, that the Vikings might be primed to knock off the Spartans for the first time since 2001, but La Canada was just too composed down the stretch.

Blair got as close as 2 points once, but each time they made a run, the Spartans would break a press and convert on the other end.

La Canada earned a 51-47 road victory in a Rio Hondo League showdown between two of the league’s powers.

Dez Washington had 19 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Vikings, but the senior was frustrated afterwards with himself and the defensive effort he felt was lacking.

Brendan Co, a 5-foot-5 guard led all scorers with 20 for La Canada.

He is what coach Tom Hofman called “our engine. He makes us go.”

Ryan Graves had a killer 3 pointer just after Blair had gotten the Spartans lead down to 3 points late in the second half.

Donald Guyton had 9 points for Blair and Zavior Smith had 8.

Blair will travel to San Marino on Wednesday and to Temple City on Friday as Rio Hondo League action heats up.

Box Score:
LC: 14-18-11-8-(51)
Blair: 17-5-12-12-(47)

Records:
La Canada (10-8, 2-0); Blair (13-5, 1-1)
