Two weeks ago, no one could have seen this one coming.

The Flintridge Prep softball program had been waiting and waiting for athletes from both the Rebels’ CIF champion soccer and CIF runners up from the basketball to join the team.

After a month of struggling, the Rebels have their roster in tact and they not only started battling Prep League powers, they defeated their arch rival on Tuesday.

Prep, using a walk-off base hit from Melissa Grande, defeated Poly, 7-6.

Grande went 2 for 3 with a bases-clearing double and the walk-off base hit in the seventh that scored Natalie Dale.

Dale went 3 for 4, stole two bases, played well on defense and came home on Grande’s walk-off base hit.

Elyse Chan went 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored for Poly and Jacqueline Garrity added two hits, including a double and three RBIs.

Megan Kelleher was 1 for 1 with a pair of walks, two runs scored and an RBI for the Panthers, and Vivian Wheeler had one hit, scored and finished with two RBIs.

Prep will host Chadwick on Wednesday at 3:30.

Poly will host first-place Mayfield today (Wednesday) at 3:30 with the hopes of gaining ground on the Cubs.

Quotable:

Flintridge Prep coach Julie Mejia: “We played great defense behind Kate and she was able to keep us in the game. I love that we’re taking it a game at a time and one competitor at a time. We’re just trying to stay within ourselves to compete. Melissa Grande has been a great leader for us and she’s made great plays in the outfield, in the dugout and at the plate and Natalie Dale is a senior and she’s really stepped up for us.Poly-Prep is a great rivalry and it was a great game and went back and forth. We have eight freshman, and to come up and find a way to win speaks volumes for the character of the team.”
