As good as things were going for the Poly girls volleyball program, you had to figure it would suffer a letdown at some point.

After starting Prep League play 5-0, including victories over perennial powers Westridge and Chadwick, the Panthers had sole possession of first place.

Mayfield, though, didn’t want people to forget about them.

The Cubs battled Westridge throughout last week’s loss and finished second at a Nike Tournament in Arizona to finish the week on solid ground.

Friday’s 4-game victory at Poly gives not only Mayfield new life, but it throws the Prep League into a jump ball.

Mayfield took out Poly by scores of 25-15, 18-25, 25-19 and 25-15.

Maddie Reed was outstanding with 20 kills.

Angelica Raymundo had 32 assists and Olivia Smith had 8 blocks for the Cubs.

“Playing with some injures, we put our faith in our senior setter Andrea Raymundo and our junior opposite Maddie Reed,” Mayfield coach Stephen Bernabe said. “Our girls played with lots of confidence and played together the entire game.”

Prep League Standings:
Westridge (13-2 overall, 6-1 in league)
Poly (10-5, 5-1)
Mayfield (12-10-1, 5-2)
Chadwick (9-5, 5-2)
Flintridge Prep (6-8-1, 3-4)
Rio Hondo Prep (5-12-1, 1-8)
Firebaugh (0-8, 0-8)
