Caltech women’s cross country freshman Sophie Walton (Emerald Hills, Calif. / Sequoia) has been named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year, the conference office announced today.

SCIAC Release

Walton placed sixth overall and top among all rookies at the SCIAC Championships in Prado Regional Park this past weekend, leading her team to its best finish since 1995 while earning First Team All-SCIAC honors.  She improved from a disappointing finish at the Multi-Duals, where she placed just 26th overall behind six other freshmen, to record her second straight Top 10 finish after placing fourth at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational two weeks prior.   She is the first Beaver in program history to be named Newcomer of the Year.

Walton will compete alongside six teammates at the NCAA West Regional Championships in Salem, Ore. on Saturday, Nov. 12 with an eye toward qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
