From STAFF REPORTS

It took Poly two quarters to get back into playing form after a few weeks off during the holiday vacation.

But once they found their form, the Panthers outscored Mayfield 9-5 in the second half, and were able to outlast the Cubs on Monday by a score of 15-13.

Poly improved to 11-1 overall, and 5-0 in the Prep League.

Talie Wilmans led all scorers with 7 goals.

Megan Kelleher had four goals and Colleen Woo added 3 for the Panthers.

Claire Engstrom led Mayfield (9-3) with 4 goals, while Julia Mozilo, Ciara Venegas and Kathryn McCullough had 3 goals apiece for the Cubs.

Poly will go to Chadwick (9-3, 3-0) on Wednesday at 6 p.m., as league play continues, and sole possession of first play at stake.

Poly coach Ryan Katsuyama’s take on Monday’s game:
“Poly got off to a slow start following a 3-week break in game action. Mayfield capitalized by taking a 5-3 lead in the first quarter and 8-6 lead at halftime.

Poly’s defense in the 3rd quarter took control, forcing 4 turnovers and blocking 5 shots. This fueled our counter-attack, which saw Poly score 4 times and drawing a penalty shot in transition (converted by Talie Wilmans). Poly was able to outscore the Cubs, 7-2 in the quarter to take a 3 goal lead into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, freshman Megan Kelleher converted two 6-on-5 power play opportunities to give the Panthers some breathing room. Senior Colleen Woo came up with 3 of her team high 5 steals in the 4th quarter to help seal the victory.”
