Caltech women’s tennis notched its first-ever win over a nationally ranked opponent in a 7-2 victory over No. 40 California Lutheran University on Friday afternoon.

Box Score

The Beavers swept all six singles matches to rally from a 1-2 deficit after doubles and record the decisive victory over the Regals, which were picked one spot ahead of Caltech in the SCIAC Preseason Coaches Poll. Caltech improves to 4-2 overall and is one of just three undefeated teams in SCIAC play at 2-0 alongside No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, with both losses coming to nationally ranked opponents.

The hosts fell into early holes at all three doubles courts, but began to fight back at the top court and finally locked up a point with an 8-5 win. A tight battle at #2 went CLU’s way, 8-6, to give the visitors a 2-1 edge heading into singles.

After some brief back-and-forth play at all but #3 singles, the Beavers took control with first set victories on the bottom five courts. That proved to be the breaking point against CLU as freshman Angelica Zhou (Temple City, Calif. / Arcadia) tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #3 and the Beavers promptly received another two with retirements at #5 and #2. Almost an hour later, rookie Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School) clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at #4 over CLU’s #2 player all last season. Sophomore Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) and senior Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) soon closed out their matches at #1 and #6, respectively, to end the match.
