The Pasadena City College women’s badminton team is having its easiest trip ever to a South Coast Conference title. With a 6-0 perfect record through two rounds of SCC play, the Lancers have outscored their opponents by the lopsided count of 121-5.

PCC’s conference winning streak is at 27 matches dating back to the beginning of the 2015 season. The Lancers (7-0 overall) have never lost a regular season match, including non-conference contests, at 31-0 under the watch of head coach Jen Ho, who is in her third season in charge of the program.

On Mar. 24 at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium, the Lancers trounced visiting El Camino, 20-1. All 16 of the team’s individual match victories were sweeps. PCC No. 1 player Sarah Thaw waltzed past El Camino’s top player Sam Kong, 21-6, 21-7, and No. 2 Oanh Le, 21-3, 21-4. Lancers’ No. 2 Hong Yan Liu beat Kong, 21-7, 21-13, and Le, 21-5, 21-7. Only No. 3 Noemi Diaz lost a match, falling to ECC’s No. 3 Phoebe Torres, 21-18, 21-17. Diaz beat Amanda Lee, 21-17, 22-20 in her other singles match.

Chaw Thinzar Mon (#4), May Hy (#5), and Annie Ly (#6) each won two matches in singles. In doubles, Natalie Ong and JunTing Huang played at No. 1 and scored wins over Kong-Le, 21-6, 21-7, and Torres-Lee, 21-5, 21-3. Diaz teamed with Janin Herrera at No. 2 doubles and won 21-15, 21-12 over Kong-Le and 21-17, 21-14 over Torres-Lee. My and Ly then coupled for likely the world’s shortest last named doubles team and won their lone No. 3 doubles match over Pia Torres and Maiko Brennan, 21-9, 21-3.

On Mar. 22 on the road, the Lancers blanked ECC Compton Center, 21-0.

The Lancers host Compton on Wednesday, Mar. 29 and with a win can clinch at least a tie for their 13th SCC title in 18 years that the sport has been in existence at the California Community College level. Match time is 2 p.m.
