CJ Montes Justin Lockhart Fri at Monrovia
From Staff Reports:
For anyone who left La Salle High School last Friday after the Lancers offense sputtered all game long, you might have had questions as to how they’d fare the following week at Monrovia.
If their parents and fans thought the struggle would continue, they were right.
Monrovia took a 27-14 lead into the break.
La Salle was just going to lay down and accept their second consecutive loss, right?
Nope!
Freshman CJ Montes, who last week threw a game-altering Pick-6, showed Friday why his teammates and coaches have so much confidence in the 14 year old.
Montes led a furious comeback with 4 TD passes and 186 yards in three quarters played.
The Lancers battled back and held off Monrovia on a 2-point conversion and one final Wildcats’ drive to secure the win.
Montes was 14 of 19 for 186 yards and the four scores.
Justin Lockhart connected with Montes on a 40-yard score.
Jacob McDonough’s 20-yard TD reception got the Lancers to within 34-28.
Montes then hit Donte Coxsom on a 1-yard scoring strike, but Coxsom wasn’t done yet.
His 45-yard TD run gave La Salle (1-1) a 42-34 lead with 6:12 to play.
Give Monrovia credit, though, as the Wildcats battled back when Maury Rams rumbled in from 7 yards out to get as close as 42-40 with 3:38 to play.
Monrovia went for the 2-point conversion and handed the ball to their big-game running back, but the Lancers stuffed Rams behind the line of scrimmage to hold on to their 42-40 lead.
La Salle’s defense needed to make one last stop to ensure victory.
Monrovia got as close as the La Salle 38-yard line, when, on 4th-and-7, a pass fell incomplete.
Rams had a game-high 216 yards on 31 carries, and he scored twice.
Although La Salle coach Russell Gordon wouldn’t commit to a starter next week, it would be seen as unusual if Montes didn’t get his first start of the season.
Chris Wilson opened the game at quarterback against both Arcadia and Monrovia and has yet to really find his rhythm, but make no mistake about it, Wilson will see playing time.
For a second week, the youthful Lancers had no personal fouls, which was something that plagued the 2016 La Salle team.
La Salle will travel next week to Van Nuys to take on Birmingham (0-2) on Friday at 7.
Quotable:
La Salle coach Russell Gordon: “We’ve still got to play both of them (Wilson and Montes), because they’ve both done good and bad things. They both deserve the chance to make plays. At half time, I told them ‘let’s go out and get a stop and score and get momentum,’ and that’s exactly what we did. Momentum becomes a monster, and we needed to create momentum. CJ’s composure and ability to read the field and connect with the receivers was what impressed me most. We played like a group and no one was selfish. Treynell Stewart had an amazing game. He made some great receptions and competed against a young man who has multiple Division 1 offers. We showed a lot of character. Our young kids played their tails off. We did not have one personal foul. We as coaches are so proud of the kid’s composure and self discipline.”
