Sophomore Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) proved to be force up close, leading Caltech Volleyball with 15 kills as the Beavers fell to visiting Providence Christian College on Wednesday.
With Lauinger leading the way, the Beavers saw their kill total increase from seven to 14 between the first and fourth sets. After falling behind two sets, the teanvious Beavers battled back in the third, usurping the Sea Beggars 25-23 to force a fourth set. Caltech found itself on the wrong end of an equally close fourth set but the attacking opportunities were plentiful for the short-handed Beavers.
Lauinger also notched 14 digs while freshman libero Allesandra Mondello (Kinnelon, N.J. / Villa Walsh Acad.) led her side with 19 digs and fellow freshman Isabell Yang (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia) had 16 digs. Freshman Krystyna Maruszko (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Marymount) helped the cause with 30 assists to go with six kills and six digs and junior Sakthi Vetrivel (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) returned to the lineup to bag seven kills for the Beavers.
Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers will travel to Life Pacific College on Friday, September 15th before opening up SCIAC play at home against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges the next day.
