The Pasadena City College women’s cross country team took 20th place out of 24 scoring colleges at the SoCal Preview Meet held at Central Park in Santa Clarita on Friday. The top Lancers racer was Raylin Galvan, a freshman from Temple City High, who placed 81st overall in the 5-kilometer course in 22 minutes, 47.1 seconds.
With 210 runners overall, next best for PCC was Yasmeen Barrios, who took 114th place at 23:46.4. Vanessa Monrreal grabbed 143rd in 24:49 and rounding out the Lancers squad were lettermen Kandice Kwan (161st, 25:44.5), Andrea Sigala (162nd, 25:45), and freshman Melissa Olivas (176th, 26:42).
The Lancers learned that it will be an uphill battle the rest of the season in comparison with other South Coast Conference teams. Four of the top 10 team finishers were SCC squads in third-place Mt. San Antonio, Cerritos (sixth), LA Harbor (eighth) and El Camino (ninth). Long Beach also was ahead of PCC in 12th. Glendale won the SoCal Preview title and had the region’s fastest racer in meet winner Angelica Salas (18:50.6). The top South Coast runner was Mt. SAC’s Teresa Castillo in seventh individually at 19:33.5.
Coach Innocent Egbunike’s Lancers will get another crack at the Central Park course on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the 6th Mustang Challenge, hosted by Master’s College. Central Park is the location of this year’s SoCal Championships in November.
