La Salle wasn’t the only thing that made Salesian look bad Friday night when the two schools met in an Angelus League opener.
The Mustangs took a few cheap shots that got at least one player ejected.
And where it counted most, on the scoreboard, the game was never in doubt.
La Salle trounced Salesian, 51-7, in a game that saw the entire second half played with a running clock, and none of the Lancers’ starters played after the first drive of the second half.
Freshman quarterback CJ Montes continued the maturation process.
He completed 10 of 19 passes for just under 200 yards, but he also had three sure catches dropped by Lancers’ receivers.
Montes had a 21-yard TD pass to Chris Wilson and a 48-yard score to Justin Lockhart.
Montes also scored on a 6-yard TD run on a fourth-and-goal play at the end of the second quarter.
Dante Coxsom touched the ball twice, and scored on both attempts.
The senior sprinted in from 37 yards out to give La Salle a 17-0 lead, and then found the end zone from 8 yards out to extend the lead to 24 points.
On the 37-yard score, he had beaten a Salesian defender, and was 8 yards deep in the end zone when a Mustangs’ player shoved him from behind into a barrier that separates players from the fans.
Freshman Damian Curl rushed for 84 yards on 8 carries, including TD runs on 10 and 9 yards, respectively.
Kole Hamane had a team-high 87 yards rushing on just four carries.
Cristian Reyes started the onslaught with an early 23-yard field goal for La Salle.
After the Lancers’ first and second team had left the field, Daniel Loy scored Salesian’s only points of the night when he crossed the goal line from 22 yards out.
Daniel Jose had an interception on defense for La Salle (3-3, 1-0).
Quotable:
La Salle coach Russell Gordon: “We ran the football and knew we needed to come out and establish the run. We had some key components that became eligible to play this week. Damian is going to be a big part of this program for four years. Dante is electric.”
La Salle quarterback CJ Montes: “It all starts with our offensive line. Damian runs the ball well and he’s hard to stop. I think we could do a little better, but I’m happy with where we’re at.”
La Salle tight end-defensive end Chris Wilson: “Obviously, I would have liked to be out there at quarterback, but I’ll do anything to be out on the field and helping my team. My role at tight end is to hit people and open lanes for our running backs. Our O-line did really well tonight.”
La Salle running back-receiver Dante Coxsom: “We practiced hard all week and came out and performed. Being balanced is huge. We need to practice hard all week and be ready to play (St. Francis next Friday).”
La Salle running back Damian Curl: “My part was blocking so the quarterback had time, and running wise, I had to keep my feet moving north to south. I want us to come out every quarter and bust our asses.”
