The Caltech women’s soccer team earned its first victory in program history over visiting Shepherd College on Friday afternoon.
The Beavers offense came to life with 40 total shots against the Thundering Herd, 24 of which found a path to the net. Freshman midfielder Krystin Brown (Lake Forest, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) led the way for the Beavers with three goals, including the final goal which came off a header set up by a clean dish from fellow freshman Netra Ravishankar (Fremont, Calif. / American). Sophomore Noelle Davis (Fort Worth, Texas / Texas Acad. of Math & Science) had the hot hand to kick things off and scored the Beavers’ first two goals of the game in the second and seventh minutes of the first period. Brown assisted on Davis’ second goal with a nice pass to the edge for one of the freshman’s two assists of the game. The goals were Davis’ first and second of the season.
Other first time goal scorers for Caltech included senior Caroline Atyeo (Parkland, Fla. / Marjory Stoneman Douglas) and freshman Vandana Agarwala (New York, N.Y. / Stuyvesant). Atyeo led the Beavers with six shots on goal and fellow senior Gabrielle Tender (Bethesda, Md. / Walt Whitman) added one assist for good measure. Additionally, junior Madelyn Stroder (Springfield, Mo. / Greenwood Laboratory) did her part by contributing a team-high two assists to the greater whole. The Beavers’ defense also held up their end of the bargain and did not allow a single shot to the Thundering Herd. Constant offensive pressure proved key as the Beavers also ended up with a game-high 10 corner kicks.
With the elusive first win behind them, Head Coach Taylor Houck and the Beavers will look to make it two in a row and pick up their first SCIAC victory when they travel to Whittier on Monday, Oct. 9 for a 7 p.m. game.
