On Senior Day, in front of family and friends, the Lady Minutemen were not going to be denied on this day of celebrating the careers of seniors, Angela Hsieh, Reagan Atallah (4 years varsity), and Madelyn Hernandez and Hellen Hong (3 years varsity).
Hsieh closes her Olympic League career as the most victorious player in league history, finishing with a league-record 94 consecutive set winning streak and a career league mark of 106-2 (3 consecutive undefeated league seasons). A 2-time league singles MVP and 4-time 1st Team All-League selection, she will enter next week’s league tournament as the #1 seed.
Hernandez secured this season’s doubles MVP (with partner, Michael Wilkins), completing MHS’s second-ever undefeated league doubles season, going 27-0. A two-time member of the 1st Team All-League team and a one-time member of the 2nd Team All-League team, she and Wilkins will also enter the league tournament as the #1 seed.
Atallah, a two-time 2nd Team All-League member, is in contention to make her first 1st Team All-League team with partner, Aria Haver-Hill. She is playing the best tennis of her career and is aiming to make a deep run into the league tourney. She and Haver-Hill should receive a fairly high seed.
Hong has made the most of her first year as a full-tiime starter, after starting the season on the bench. She and partner, Stella Wang, are also in contention for their first 1st Team All-League selection. Also playing the best tennis of her career this season, Hong and Wang’s emergence has given MHS extra hope for a deep CIF playoff run.
As far as today’s match goes, Hsieh, Malena Smith, and Rose Zhang all swept, while Hernandez/Wilkins and Hong/Wang also swept in doubles. Atallah/Haver-Hill won two of three.
Next week will be the Olympic League tourney for the top 8 singles players and top 8 doubles teams in the league. The top two finishers will represent the Olympic League in the CIF Individuals Tournament.
