The Caltech men’s basketball team impressed in a number of areas during Wednesday’s non-conference season opener at Occidental College. The game marked the fourth installment of the two schools’ annual 110 Highway Rivalry game.
Freshman Spencer Schneider (Houston, Texas / Clearbrook) had his versatility on full-display, scoring 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds to complete the first double-double of his career. The freshman theme extended beyond Schneider, however, as fellow freshman Marcus Gee (Santa Monica / Santa Monica) led the way with 18 points which included two flush three-pointers in the game’s final two minutes. Gee also shot 7-for-16 from the field and his field goal percentage also led all Beavers.
Caltech is not used to dropping games in which they out rebound their opponents, particularly when they win the rebounding battle by 14. Caltech’s team rebound count, 14 in all made all the difference but sophomore Calvin Huh (Fort Lee, N.J. / Bergen Tech) asserted himself on the glass and came down with nine rebounds to boost the Beavers.
Caltech trailed Oxy by just seven points at halftime. A lob from Schneider to sophomore point guard Alec Andrews (Folsom, Calif. / Folsom) that resulted in a layup punctuated the half. The Beavers remained within striking distance throughout most of the second half as well. A free throw from senior David Kawashima (Studio City, Calif. / North Hollywood) brought the Beavers within three at 14:43 and nearly a minute passed before either team scored any points. The more experienced Tigers took over from there but the Beavers received early contributions from key players that should bode well for the rest-of-season outlook.
Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers will turn their attention to Tuesday, November 21 when they host Pacific University in the team’s home opener.
