Sophomore Alec Andrews (Folsom, Calif. / Folsom) keyed a big team first half with seven points, three steals and two assists in Caltech’s home clash with Pacific University on Tuesday evening. The Beavers led the Boxers 31-30 at halftime.
The game represented a marked improvement for the Beavers from when they faced off with the Boxers last year in Oregon. The Beavers mustered a mere 44 points in the prior meeting but this time around likely benefited from the lack of travel and improved awareness and experience in the backcourt. Andrews finished the game as one of three Beavers to reach double-figures with 11 points. Fellow sophomore Bret Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif. / Santa Fe Christian) led the home team with 12 points and senior wing David Kawashima (Studio City, Calif. / North Hollywood) came up with another 11 points to go along with seven rebounds. Sophomore center Calvin Huh (Fort Lee, N.J. / Bergen Tech) led all players on the glass with 11 boards.
Improved free throw shooting from last week’s season opener at Occidental College proved to be a factor in the Beavers’ ability to keep the Boxers at arm’s length. Caltech shot 75 percent from the line, up almost 30 percent from the prior game. Freshman Marcus Gee (Santa Monica / Santa Monica) helped matters with a 5-for-5 day at the line. Caltech also succeeded defensively, holding Pacific to its lowest team point total of the season, which is largely owed to the the Beavers forcing the opposition into 22 turnovers. Caltech came up with 14 steals and the trio of Andrews, Kawashima and Johnson combined for 11 of those steals, further illustrating the defensive presence in the backcourt.
Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers will take on Linfield College on Nov. 22 at the University of La Verne. The Beavers came up short in last year’s game at Linfield and while the Wildcats took down La Verne earlier in the day, Caltech’s result against Pacific could be a sign of better things to come.
