Freshman Spencer Schneider (Houston, Texas / Clearbrook) picked up his second double-double of the season one day after coming in one rebound away from accomplishing the same feat against the University of California Santa Cruz on Saturday at the Lee Fulmer Classic. With Schneider’s big effort in hand, the Beavers came within three points of their first win of the season against the Banana Slugs.
The freshman forward came off the bench and finished the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds and nabbed his first 10 points in the first half. The bench scoring ultimately proved to be a difference maker for the Beavers, as 43 of the team’s 68 points came from bench players. Freshman Gokul Srinivasaragavan (San Ramon, Calif. / Dougherty Valley) contributed 10 points off the bench and scored all of them in the first half. Another freshman guard, Marcus Gee (Santa Monica, Calif. / Santa Monica) also came off the bench to give the Beavers 13 points in addition to a perfect 5-for-5 free throw shooting game. The Beavers shot 80 percent from the charity stripe overall and connected on eight team three-pointers just one day removed from tying a program record for three’s in a game.
Seeking their first win of the season, the Beavers endured a hot stretch from the Banana Slugs to open the game before making a big recovery in the second half that gave them a chance to tie the game late. Trailing by 11 points at halftime, Caltech outscored its opponent, 35-27, in the second half and while a significant scoring run did not materialize, the Beavers slowly chipped away at their opponent until they found themselves trailing by just one point with 2:54 remaining in the game. A successful three-point play by sophomore forward Ross Carter (Sudbury, Mass. / The Rivers School) at that time put his team in a position to win the game. Carter finished the game with nine points and like Gee went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers will hook with Santa Cruz again next Saturday, Dec. 9 at 5 p.m., this time in Pasadena.
