On Monday, Maranatha High School announced that former NFL player LaVar Arrington is joining the school as its head football coach.
Arrington started his gridiron journey at Penn State, where he earned several awards, before being selected #2 overall in the 2000 NFL draft. He spent the next seven years playing for the pros as a member of the Washington Redskins and the NY Giants.
Arrington was sidelined by an injury to his Achilles tendon in 2006 and announced his retirement from the NFL in 2007, but his passion for football went far beyond the playing field. While working with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, he played a significant role teaching cutting-edge techniques to youth across the country to help the sport grow and become safer for future generations.
Coach Arrington comes to Maranatha with a gift and enthusiasm for teaching fundamentals of the sport to young players. He is looking forward to leading the Minutemen football program.
Maranatha Athletic Director Sammy Skinner describes him as “a man of integrity, (who) has unwavering faith, and we couldn’t be more excited for him to lead our young men.”
Coach Arrington feels the same excitement toward Maranatha. He said, “It is a great institution. Coach Bogan did a heck of a job and built a strong foundation. I’m looking forward to continuing the football legacy at Maranatha.”
