La Salle didn’t start as well as coach Freedom McCullough wanted in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 3A playoffs on Thursday night.
But after a redirect message at halftime, his Lancers went on a 27-7 run in the third period, and cruised by visiting Chaparral, 68-40.
Julia Macabuhay finished with a triple-double, which included 24 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocked shots.
Alyssa Arroyo added 13 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.
La Salle sophomore Crystal Ramirez finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals.
Zia Rapada led Chaparral with 17 points.
Brianna Antillon had 8 points and Nicole Ortiz chipped in 5 points for the Lancers.
La Salle will take a 197-mile bus trip Saturday night to San Luis Obispo to battle Mission Prep (17-7) in the second round.
The Royals rallied from a 17-point, second-half deficit to beat Garden Grove, 58-54.
Quotable:
La Salle coach Freedom McCullough: “I thought we stepped up and the role players did what they needed to do. We missed some shots early, but we got it together. They (Chaparral) gave it a run, but we got the job done. We got rid of the jitters and played well. AJ Arroyo and Crystal Ramirez really stepped up to the plate and played solid defense. I was most happy that we did not come out well or play our best, but after our halftime talk, they picked up the intensity big time.”
