From STAFF REPORTS

Twenty four hours after suffering a walk-off defeat against their rivals from Flintridge Prep, Poly had to get back on the field and take on first-place Mayfield.

The Cubs entered the game 5-0 in Prep League play and enjoyed a two-game advantage in the loss column over second-place Poly.

Mayfield looked to make it three games when they got out to a three-run lead in the first inning.

But Elyse Chan held the Cubs scoreless the rest of the way, and the Panthers rallied for four runs in the final inning to cap an amazing comeback.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh and having one out and nobody on base, Poly started to scratch back.

Pinch hitter Maddy Ruedaflores got hit by a pitch.

Ali Ulin tripled home the Panthers’ first run.

Vivian Wheeler walks, steals second and then third on the throw home.

The tying run was now on second with one out, but Jaylin Domingo strikes out the Poly batter and is one out away from victory.

Mayfield, though, elected to intentionally walk Brennah Bronk and Jacqueline Garrity to load the bases.

With Megan Kelleher up and a 3-and-2 count, Kelleher hit a shot over the left fielder’s head, which scored the tying and winning runs for Poly.

That one hit was the difference between being one-game back in the loss column and a three-game deficit.

For all intents and purposes, the comeback now provides area softball fans with a dramatic final few weeks of the season and for the Prep League championship.

Vivian Wheeler went 2 for 3 with a run scored and a double.

Elyse Chan struck out seven for Poly and got the win in the circle.

Jaylin Domingo went 1 for 3 and had an RBI, and Alyssa Romo added one hit, a stolen base and she drove in two of the Cubs’ three runs.

In the circle, Domingo went all 6 2/3 innings, allowing sevens hits, walked four and she struck out seven Poly batters.
