From Staff Reports:

It hasn’t been the season that anyone at St. Francis had hoped for, but this staff and roster is far too proud and talented not to play this schedule out like they were headed to the playoffs.

And on Monday, the Golden Knights showed signs of why they had such high hopes at the beginning of the season.

Senior Aaron Treloar made his final start on the mound and helped himself at the plate to get the win.

The 6-foot-3 right hander allowed three earned runs and struck out eight over six innings to get the victory.

Treloar doubled, tripled, scored once and drove in three runs at the plate, as the Golden Knights earned a series-opening 8-5 victory over visiting Loyola.

The victory is noteworthy for a few reasons.

First, it matches last year’s win total for the entire season, it also helped St. Francis catch Loyola in fifth place in the Mission League and it snapped a six-game league losing streak.

Patrick Hubbs got the loss for the Cubs, after allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits over 3 1/3 innings.

Brandon Barba went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and Kevin Parada hit a two-run shot for Loyola.

Doyle Kane went 3 for 4 for SF, including two RBIs.

Matt Odom was 2 for 3, with a triple, sac and a pair of runs scored.

John Politis finished 1 for 3 with a double and Christian Muro added a triple, RBI and two runs scored.

Mikey Kane collected one hit, was hit by pitch and scored twice for the Golden Knights.

Tanner Tomko came on in the seventh and went the final inning scoreless to earn the save.

St. Francis will travel to Loyola on Wednesday at 3:30 and then the Cubs and Golden Knights end their seasons on Thursday at 6 at the Glendale Sports Complex.

Quotable:

St. Francis senior Aaron Treloar: “It feels good to come out of my St. Francis baseball career with a win on the mound. I didn’t have my best stuff today, but I feel that I competed and pitched well when it really mattered. I’m proud of the team today for battling back and grinding out at-bats. Hopefully this momentum will carry us into our final two games and ensure that us seniors go out with a bang.”
