Looking back, it won’t necessarily be Tuesday’s 5-4 loss at the hands of visiting Chadwick that will drive the Mayfield softball program crazy when thinking about what could have been.
It was the May 3 loss to sixth-place Westridge that will, because the Cubs players and coaches would be the first to tell you that it was a game and a team they should have handled, and it would have made today’s loss irrelevant.
But Mayfield found itself in a situation where a home win clinches the outright Prep League championship and a loss, made it a tri-championship with Poly and Chadwick.
The latter became the scenario.
Jaylin Domingo got the loss in the circle, despite allowing just two earned runs.
Domingo didn’t walk a batter and struck out six.
Domingo did her share at the plate, going 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
Julia Watson hit a solo shot for the Cubs.
Malayna Domingo doubled and scored.
Mayfield will close out their 2018 regular season slate with a nonleague game with visiting Carnegie Schools of Riverside at 4 today (Wednesday), and then they’ll wait for the weekend for CIF to post the softball playoff brackets.
