The contrast between the way the Pasadena and Muir baseball programs ended the 2018 regular season could not be more striking.
With its two-game sweep over the Bulldogs on Friday, the Mustangs have won six consecutive Pacific League games and PHS has lost five straight.
Muir out-hit PHS by two and claimed the 3-2 road victory in a battle of aces.
Brian Love earned the win on the mound for the Mustangs.
Love went the distance, allowing just two runs on six hits.
The Muir junior improved to 6-1 after walking one and striking out three over his 84-pitch effort.
Alvie Castro got the loss, despite allowing just an earned run over 5 1/3 innings.
Castro scattered six hits, walked three and struck out six on 111 pitches.
Steve Lopez went the final 1 2/3 innings and didn’t allow a run, while striking out two.
Muir sophomore Amaris Harrison drove in two of the three Mustangs’ runs on Friday, and finished 1 for 3.
Valente Vera also had one hit and the other Mustangs’ RBI.
Kevin Torres and Ely Resendiz both had two hits each for Muir, with Torres scoring once for the Mustangs.
Angel Lopez singled and scored for the Mustangs.
Adrian DePasquale went 2 for 3 with a double for PHS.
The PHS star senior catcher scored once and drove in a run.
David Banuelos, Christian Zambrano and Aaron Corder each singled for the Bulldogs.
Muir has earned its first CIF-SS playoff spot since the late 1980’s.
PHS will have to wait until Monday at 10 a.m. when CIF releases the baseball brackets on www.cifss.org.
