Poly looked every bit the No. 1 seed in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 6 playoffs.

The Panthers pounded out 18 hits in their 13-1 victory over visiting South El Monte on Thursday afternoon.

Matt Queen had an incredible game.

Queen went the first five innings and didn’t allow a run to pick up his area-best ninth win.

The senior lefty gave up two hits, walked a pair and struck out eight South El Monte batters.

At the plate, Queen went 2 for 4 with a home run and a triple. He scored two runs scored and collected three RBIs.

Matt Loomis Pitching vs South El Monte

Poly took a 10-0 lead three innings in and the game was never in doubt.

AJ Navarro was saddled with the loss after allowing 11 runs (nine earned) and 14 hits over a three-inning stretch.

Navarro walked one and struck out two batters.

Franco Alonso singled, homered, scored twice and drove in three runs.

Ty Evans finished 4 for 4 with a double, triple, three runs scored and an RBI.

David Mathias, Sean Tibay, Joe Masters and Jackson Hayes had two hits apiece for the Panthers.

Luis Rojas had two of SEM’s five hits and drove in the Eagles’ only run.

Poly will face Azusa on Tuesday in the second round.

The Aztecs defeated Coast Union, 3-0.
