From Staff Reports:

The 2018 baseball season at Muir is literally one for the ages.

It was their best season is over three decades.

They earned their first playoff spot in at least 31 years after finishing in third place in the Pacific League.

They earned postseason victories over both Twentynine Palms and Rancho Christian in the first and second rounds, respectively.

Muir went further than second-place Arcadia (24-3) in the postseason and as far as league champion Crescenta Valley (25-5).

A first-year coach named Adonis Harrison has created a new culture and the future looks very bright for the Mustangs and this program.

But as far as 2018 goes, unfortunately for Muir, the clock struck midnight on this Cinderella season.

But it took one hell of a pitcher to finish off the Mustangs.

Damian Ureta threw a two-hit shutout and led El Rancho to a 3-0 victory in Friday’s quarterfinal round of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs.

The Dons’ sophomore walked one and struck out four to improve to 11-3 this season.

Ureta also collected his eighth complete game of the season.

Ely Resendiz singled and doubled to account for the Mustangs offense.

Valente Vera got the loss, after allowing the three runs over his seven innings on the mound.

Vera scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out two.

But make no mistake about it, when people look back at this 2018 season some 20 years from now, and when Muir turned the corner as a baseball program, Valente Vera’s name will shine brightly as a senior who did so many things to make this program take the next step.

Offensively for El Rancho, Jason Vela had three hits and scored one run, and Dom Hernandez went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs.

Box Score:
El Rancho: 2-0-0-0-0-1-0-(3)
Muir: 0-0-0-0-0-0-0-(0)

Win: Damian Ureta (11-3)
Loss: Valente Vera

2B: Omar Sanchez (ER), Ely Resendiz (M)

Records: El Rancho (21-11) ; Muir (15-8-1)
