It’s no secret that the 2018 football season is going to be a steep climb for La Salle.

They lost most of their talent to both graduation and transfers.

But after a blowout loss last week at Arcadia, the Lancers made strides Friday night.

Salesian defeated La Salle 7-6, but first-year coach Andrew Pankow loved the grit and fight he saw in his players.

La Salle took a 6-0 lead in the third quarter on a four-yard connection between quarterback Mario Veliz and Giovanni Butteri.

The extra point failed, though, and it turned out to be costly, as Salesian answered back in the same quarter and converted on their point after try.

Veliz completed 7 of 12 passes for 55 yards, and Van Haslett was 4 of 9 for 14 yards.

Daniel Jose led the rushing attack with 19 yards on 8 carries.

Haslett and Veliz combined for 10 carries for minus-26 yards.

Corbin Jones led La Salle with 33 yards receiving on 3 catches.

Daniel Jose had a team-high six catches for 15 yards.

Isaac Mora caught two passes for 7 yards.

La Salle will host Birmingham this Friday at 7.

The Patriots had a bye last night, but opened the season in week zero with a 30-21 victory over Harvard-Westlake.

Quotable:

La Salle coach Andrew Pankow: “I am extremely proud of the effort our boys showed. We faced a lot of adversity and had to call upon a number of younger kids to step up and they didn’t back down. In the end, Salesian made a few more plays than us and we had a couple of mental mistakes that hurt us. It is definitely a tough loss, but I think we took a big step forward. We just need to correct the mental errors and build on the positives of last night’s game.”

Box Score:
Salesian: 0-0-7-0-(7)
La Salle: 0-0-6-0-(6)
