From Staff Reports:

They might be young.

And they might be small.

But don’t underestimate the heart of a Poly football player or team, and especially one led by coach Chris Schmoke.

For the second week in a row, a 28-man roster decimated an opponent.

Poly hammered La Canada, 52-0, during Saturday afternoon’s fall tailgate.

The Panthers’ programs had a solid day with the football victory, the boys water polo team defeating El Rancho, 19-10, and the girls volleyball program finished second as tournament host.

Henry Dean scored twice on the defensive side of the ball.

Dean had a pick-six interception and a scoop-and-score off a fumble.

Thibeaux Hirsh also picked off a pass for Poly.

Franco Alonso continues his excellence as well.

The senior scored on runs of 40 and 64 yards and caught two passes for 53 yards.

In all, Poly had 31 carries for 225 yards, including 41 from Brandon Szeto, 40 for Hirsh and Connor Boyle rushed for 31 yards on six carries.

Dean also had one catch for 41 yards from quarterback Robbie Wilson and he tallied six tackles on defense, which was tied for second best with Sheldon Williams.

Thomas McConnell led the Panthers defense with a team-high 11 tackles.

Poly hopes to move to 3-0 next Saturday when they take on Brentwood at South Pasadena High School.

The Eagles (2-0) have consecutive victories over Fillmore and Hueneme by a combined margin of 68-31.

Poly and Brentwood tied last season in the Panthers’ third game when neither school scored in three overtimes.

Kickoff is set for 7.

Quotable:

Poly coach Chris Schmoke: “We were sloppy with our execution today, but we had a great effort. I know we can and will improve in our execution, so I am happy with the progress. We have a great group of kids.”
