This fifth week of the 2018 football season saw St. Francis and Poly win its second consecutive games, while Muir bounced back in a big way from a loss in week four.
St. Francis earned a 21-point road victory at Harvard-Westlake.
Muir destroyed Hoover by 60 points.
And Poly earned the 21-6 victory over California City.
Crescenta Valley scored the first 37 points in their Pacific League contest with Pasadena and withstood a late Bulldogs’ rally.
La Salle got their first multi-TD game of the season, and fell, 38-20, at Cerritos Valley Christian.
Maranatha struggled throughout, as Brentwood came to Pasadena and handled the Minutemen, 42-9.
After two consecutive victories to break a 32-game losing streak, Blair has now dropped consecutive games to Lighthouse Christian and Milken by a combined margin of 84-0.
Flintridge Prep opened their season with consecutive victories over Sun Valley and Mammoth by a combined total of 163-30.
Villanova Prep, though, handed the Rebels their first loss of the season Friday by a score of 37-37.
St. Francis (3-2) picked up its first road victory after losses at Mira Costa and Westlake in week’s one and three, respectively.
One key difference was, unlike the other two road games, St. Francis got out to a lead and didn’t have to play catch up.
Another big plus for the Golden Knights was that quarterback Darius Perrantes lived up to the reputation he very much earned last season when he led SF to their first CIF title game appearance since 1964.
Perrantes threw for three touchdowns and over 260 yards.
Tanner Tomko had a monster game as well, with 7 catches for 186 yards and two scores.
Despite the offense missing Kevin Armstead at running back, freshman Max Garrison has stepped up without any warning the last two weeks and has been outstanding.
Garrison had five more TD’s on Friday night, as the Golden Knights defeated the Wolverines at Harvard-Westlake, 48-27, in a nonleague game.
Muir (4-1 overall, 1-1 in league) bounced back from a disappointing Pacific League opening loss to Crescenta Valley last week with a 67-7 thumping over Hoover.
Caleb Snowden destroyed the Hoover secondary.
He had five catches for 172 yards and two scores.
In all, eight different Muir players scored the 10 Mustangs’ TD’s in the blowout.
The Harrison brothers each scored once.
Aryonis caught a 75-yard TD pass from Brian Love and Amaris threw a 66-yard scoring strike to Snowden.
Muir will have another lopsided victory this weekend when they face Glendale on Friday.
One week prior, Pasadena defeated Glendale, 48-7.
Poly (4-1) shut down California City on Friday afternoon, 21-6.
Jackson Treister scored two more rushing TD’s in the victory.
Brandon Szeto also scored on the ground for the Panthers.
Connor Henderson and Thibeaux Hirsh both picked off the California City quarterback.
Poly will have this week off for its bye week, and then play at Viewpoint, October 5, out in Calabasas, to start the second half of their season.
Pasadena (3-2 overall, 1-1 in league), as mentioned, allowed Crescenta Valley, namely star quarterback, Cole Doyle, to put 37 consecutive points on the board Friday night before the Bulldogs answered.
CV defeated PHS, 47-28, but the game wasn’t nearly that close.
The Bulldogs put two fourth-quarter scores on the Falcons’ second-team defense.
But there were bright spots for PHS.
Their 14-year old receiver, Mekhi Fox, scored three TD’s, including two receiving and an 80-yard punt return.
CV coach Paul Schilling said after the game that Fox was someone that is going to terrorize the league’s defense’s for three more years, while lauding his skills.
PHS quarterback Andreas Solling threw for 250 yards, three TD passes and was picked once.
In just his fifth start leading the Bulldogs’ offense, Solling has put together a two-week stretch in which he’s thrown for over 500 yards, had 7 TD’s and was picked just once.
Pasadena is in a four-way tie with Burbank, Muir and Burroughs early on for second place, and they need a victory next week when they host Burbank at 7 if they want to stay on track for a playoff spot.
