From STAFF REPORTS

It went pretty much as expected.

Harvard-Westlake came to Pasadena and handed and over-matched La Salle team, a 42-6 loss, which meant the Lancers finished 2018 with an 0-10 mark.

There were plenty of games that were blowouts and it might be hard to believe, but much was gained for the program behind first-year coach Andrew Pankow.

Take into consideration that Pankow took over a program that went 3-7 in 2017, their head coach stepped down and every skilled player (running back, receiver, quarterback) transferred out of the school in all all-out exodus.

When Pankow took over, he knew what he was getting into.

And yet it didn’t dim his outlook.

The Lancers started the season at Arcadia, and at the time, their would-be starting quarterback was in the stands watching his classmates get thumped.

La Salle senior CJ Rettig, who stars for both the soccer and volleyball programs, decided he couldn’t stand watching when he knew he could contribute.

A couple weeks later, Rettig was on the field, and each week they made improvements that they could see, even if those watching in the stands couldn’t necessarily identify as incremental steps forward.

With Friday night’s 42-6, Del Rey League setback against visiting Harvard-Westlake, the Lancers did finish 0-10, and saddled with a last-place spot in the Del Rey League standings.

But again, they didn’t go down without a fight, and they were able to keep their dignity and competitive nature intact.

Rettig went 10 of 25 for 172 yards and was picked once.

He also had a 45-yard reception from Marcus Powe.

Warren Fowler, Corbin Jones and Cesar Gudino combined for 38 yards rushing on 12 carries.

Jones also had 3 catches for 58 yards.

Gio Butteri caught a pair of passes for 50 yards and Marcus Powe had three receptions for 51 yards.

Quotable:

La Salle coach Andrew Pankow: “As a competitor, this was an extremely difficult season to endure, especially as a first-time head coach. However, I am incredibly proud of our young men, who continued to work each and every day and never gave up on one another. They played for one another and fought to keep the program going, even though the deck was stacked against them. The future is very bright for La Salle football and I know these young men will continue to work and fight for one another. I would like to thank all of the parents for their continued support throughout the season. I would also like to thank the administration, faculty & staff of La Salle for the part they play in shaping these young men. Finally, I would like to thank my staff, who worked relentlessly to prepare our boys on a daily basis.”
