The Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team knows there is one sure way of making the postseason–win a second consecutive South Coast Conference North Division title. The Lancers are three steps from making that happen after sweeping host East Los Angeles, 25-21, 25-19, 25-19, Wednesday night.
The Lancers (10-11 overall) now lead the SCC North with a 4-1 division record. PCC avenged a 5-set loss to the Huskies back on October 3. ELAC drops to second place with a 12-8 overall mark and 3-2 North record.
PCC was paced by frosh outside hitter Leslie Rivera, who hit .400 in scoring 13 kills along with three set assists, three aces and eight digs. First-year opposite Abby Martin added eight kills, three aces and five digs. Rookie outside hitter Janell Currier picked up eight kills plus five digs. Sophomore libero Pamela Galvan tallied 21 digs. Redshirt freshman middle blocker Danielle Johnson added two kills, three aces and made three solo blocks. The 6-2 offense setter combo of Nikki Hernandez (18 assists) and Tehya Topalian (12 digs) did their part.
“We passed very well and both Janell and Leslie had good offensive matches,” said PCC head coach Mike Terrill. “I’m proud of the effort we’ve put in over the past month since our first meeting with ELAC. It’s always nice to get a positive result and although we’re close, we still have work to do to reach our maximum potential and finish strong.”
The Lancers host Mt. San Antonio on Friday, Nov. 2 in a 6 p.m. conference match at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. If PCC wins its final three regular season matches, it will capture the SCC North crown for an automatic berth into the SoCal Regional Playoffs.
