The Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team split its two matches at the Moorpark Quad Tournament held September 3. The Lancers swept Allan Hancock, 25-16, 25-17, 25-17, then had their 3-match win streak stopped by host Moorpark, 26-24, 25-23, 25-10.
PCC is 3-3 under first-year head coach Mike Terrill. Pasadena will face Moorpark again to open the 8-team, 31st San Diego Mesa Invitational, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 9-10. The second encounter v. the Raiders is Friday at 4 p.m.
Terrill talked about how close the first Moorpark meeting was despite it ending with PCC being swept.
“We played really well in the opening set and took it to extra points,” he said. “Then we go up 23-20 in the second set, and in a flash we lost our focus. Moorpark scored the next five points, puts us down 2-0, and then the next thing we know we are down 7-1 to start the third set. That’s how fast it can go one way or another in this sport. On the plus side, we really were solid throughout the Hancock victory. Vanessa Lopez, Hannah Clarke and Paige Clingaman all stepped up. Lopez did a great job of passing in the two matches.”
PCC has also been fighting with minor injuries that have kept a few players out of action.
In the Hancock win, the Lancers attacked a season-best .311 with Clingaman pounding 15 kills (.448) and Lopez adding nine kills and 11 digs. Clarke added 24 assists and served four aces while libero Monica Hernandez had 14 digs. Opposite/MB Chyna Peeler chipped in five kills, four blocks (three solo) and three aces.
Against Moorpark, sophomore opposite Shawna Ogata scored a team-best nine kills while Lopez added five kills and 12 digs. Peeler totaled four solo blocks (and an assist).
