The Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team improved to 3-0 at home and 7-5 overall with a straight sets victory over Santiago Canyon, 25-14, 25-22, 25-16, Friday night at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. All of the PCC home wins have come by sweeps and in a 3-day span.
Frosh outside hitter Vanessa Lopez continued her impressive play with 12 kills (.314 attack percentage) while fellow OH Paige Clingaman scored nine kills in just 17 attempts (.471). The team hit .314 overall with MB Amanda Pickering adding eight kills (.318).
The Lancers’ serving has been a strong point for the team and against the Hawks (2-3) they dropped in 15 aces, including five by letterman DS Monica Hernandez and four by sophomore OH Rayleen Rivera. In the final set, Rivera, who had missed several matches due to injury after setting a single-match kills record early in the year, returned to the lineup and served three straight aces during a 10-0 sideout for PCC.
PCC head coach Mike Terrill praised the play of letterman setter Hannah Clarke, who had 29 assists, three kills and eight digs, and libero Michelle Boyd, who had 17 digs, five assists, and three aces.
“Hannah has been finding the open hitter and it’s getting us points,” he said. “Michelle is a steady player on defense. Offensively, Vanessa and Paige have picked up the slack for us and hitting well. We have some ways to go in coming together as a team, but I’m happy that we are establishing home court advantage and playing with confidence on our home floor.”
For Santiago Canyon, Riley Hausner made 19 digs and Destinee Blue tallied nine kills.
Next Friday, Sept. 23, the Lancers open South Coast Conference North Division play at Rio Hondo College. First serve is 6 p.m.
