Maranatha 23, Duarte 7
Steve Bogan didn’t win four CIF-Southern Section championships at South Hills by mistake.
The man can coach.
And despite an injury to its most dominant player (Terrance Lang), and others, Maranatha won its second game of the year Friday night when it defeated visiting Duarte, 23-7.
The Minutemen (2-2-1) defense kept Duarte’s offense in check all night, and did it early.
On its first play of the night for the Falcons, Duarte quarterback Devon Hemsley tossed the ball in the air near the end zone and Maranatha’s Sabien Rivera pounced on it for a touchdown.
One play later (on offense for Duarte), the Minutemen saw linebacker Sam Ryan recover a fumble deep in Falcons territory.
Zack McClendon turned that into 7 points on a short run.
The only Falcons (3-2) score came on a Hemsley 37-yard strike to Xevion Harrison.
Kwon Peterson had an 8-yard TD pass to David Allen and the Minutemen have their second straight win.
Peterson finished 12 of 19 for 173 yards.
Alejandro Lopez kicked a 35-yard field goal for Maranatha.
Village Christian (4-1) will be in next Friday as the Minutemen host the Crusaders in an Olympic League opener for both teams.
