Mayfield and coach Stephen Bernabe had an impressive second-place performance over the weekend in Arizona.
Mayfield knocked off Carlsbad’s Pacific Ridge High in the semifinals, by scores of 25-21 and 25-22.
But in the finals of the Ruby Division, the Cubs fell to Thatcher (of Thatcher, Arizona), 15-25 and 23-25.
“We’re a young team that is growing in experience and earning respect through our play,” Bernabe said.
The Cubs will be back in action Tuesday at Rio Hondo Prep (4:30), as the Prep League schedule resumes.
