Through the first six weeks, win or lose, the La Salle offense was a fine-oiled machine.
That was before a 17-0 setback to first-place Cathedral two weeks ago, which saw star running back Amon Milliner held to 97 yards under his weekly average and no scores.
Last week, AJ Akobian returned from a lengthy injury, and he and Milliner scored a TD apiece in La Salle’s 16-14 victory over St. Paul.
That loss snapped a 12-game Angelus League skid.
Friday night, though, Milliner and Akobian were unstoppable.
The two combined for 476 yards on the ground and SEVEN touchdowns.
Milliner had 342 yards rushing and had TD runs of 79, 34, 51, 1 yards.
Akobian scored on TDs of 1, 2, and 28 yards.
Milliner loves having his buddy back, and knowing Akobian is someone to take some of the burden off his shoulders.
“I felt good,”Akobian said. “I couldn’t wait to get back and help Amon out. We’ve bonded since we were freshman.”
La Salle coach Russell Gordon couldn’t be more happy to have Akobian in the line up.
“It’s great to have 22 (Akobian) back healthy. That’s what we were missing in our first two league games,” Gordon said. “They are thunder and lightning.”
Milliner’s numbers just continue to pile up.
The senior now has 1,881 yards on 224 carries, and 19 touchdown runs.
“I just feel good that we came out here and got the win,” Milliner said. “I am happy he came back, because I get more rest and we all like having him here with us.”
