PCC came into Saturday night’s contest with winless LA Southwest College on a two-game losing streak.
Last week, the Lancers were embarrassed by a winless Glendale team.
They weren’t going to let that happen again.
Wide receiver Yusuf Muhammad, running back James Shaw III and quarterback Jesse Hanckel all did their part in PCC’s 42-14 win over hapless LA Southwest College Saturday night.
All three players scored at least one touchdown and improved the Lancers record to 4-4, which is important, because with two games to play, PCC has a solid shot at a .500 record for the first time in 7 years.
Hanckel had a 1-yard TD run in the first quarter, and another 1-yard score with 9:06 to play in the third quarter to give PCC a 42-7 lead.
Hanckel finished an effiecient 13 of 16 for 211 yards, including a 37-yard TD strike to Muhammad.
“It was the first time in a long time that I’ve been able to drop back and have confidence in my line just to sit back and throw,” Hanckel said. “Our receivers made plays and our running game was efficient. (Muhammad) is extremely important. Getting the ball into his hands makes my life a lot easier.”
Muhammad, the PCC premier playmaker, had 5 catches for 81 yards, including a second-half reception deep in LA Southwest territory to set up another score.
Whenever PCC wins, it seems Muhammad gets his touches.
“I feel like we came out fired up,” Muhammad said. “We had a great week of practice and I’m proud of my guys. I just do what I’m told. If I have opportunities to make big plays, I will. Coach puts so much effort into what he does that we want to work for him.”
Shaw carried the ball 19 times for 113 yards, including a 1-yard score in the second quarter that extended the PCC lead to 21-7.
“I have to give thanks to the offensive line and coaches for giving me the chance to run the ball,” Shaw said. “Last week’s loss humbled us and we had a really good week of practice.”
Shaw has two 100-yard games in his three active games since returning from injury.
Reggie Harvey also scored for the Lancers, with a 3-yard TD run in the second quarter.
Amad Andrews had a 3-yard TD run in the 21-point second quarter for PCC.
The Lancers rushing game compiled 199 yards on the ground, and the PCC defense held LA Southwest to 1 net yard rushing.
PCC will try and win its first road game of the year next week then they travel to East LA College.
