Freshman Julia Fay (Oakland, Calif. / Coll. Prep School) made a career-high three blocks in Caltech volleyball’s 3-0 defeat to No. 22 University of La Verne on Saturday afternoon.

The Leopards steadily built up a 12-7 lead in the first set before breaking it open with seven unanswered points. Caltech stopped the bleeding with a kill by freshman Lauren Li (Bellaire, Texas / Bellaire), handing the serve to rookie Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon). The Beavers proceeded to force La Verne into four straight attack errors, including a block by Li and Fay, to pull back within six at 19-13. The teams traded points from there, but a final three-point run by the Leopards clinched the set, 25-18.

La Verne dominated the second set with 15 kills on a .600 hitting percentage to win, 25-5, and surged to an 11-5 lead in the third set, but the Beavers recovered to move back within two at 13-11. Caltech hung close through a 16-13 score line until the visitors separated for good, taking the match 25-14.

Li led the Beavers with eight kills and added five digs, while Lauinger posted a team-high six digs.

Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers host West Coast Baptist in the season finale on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 6:00 p.m.
