There was no team in the area that played better and for longer stretches than the St. Francis football program.
The Golden Knights were 9-1 and had humbled everyone in their path with the exception of Cathedral.
Trailing 38-14 late in their CIF-SS Division 3 opener at Palos Verdes, the Golden Knights were able to score two touchdowns in the game’s final two minutes.
But St. Francis decided to go for the win on a 2-point conversion instead of playing it safe and going into overtime by kicking the extra-point attempt.
It was an aggressive move, and aggression is part of the reason St. Francis (9-2) had so much success this season.
The conversion attempt fell short and the Golden Knights season ended, 38-37 in the most cruel fashions one could face.
It’s not worth second guessing the call, because it was precisely that mindset that had St. Francis in the driver’s seat all season.
Michael Bonds was fantastic again.
The senior quarterback was 26 of 37 for 357 yards, 3 passing touchdowns and another on the ground.
Gabriel Matthews and Daniel Scott had huge games as well.
Matthews caught 5 passes for 125 yards and a score, and Scott caught 8 passes for 108 yards and a TD. He also came up with a clutch, late interception.
“This was just such a great group of guys,” St. Francis coach Jim Bonds said. “It hurts that our season is over. They played with great heart, as they did all season. I will truly miss coaching them.”
